Losing track of date and time. And my sinuses are still screwy... no surprise there, but its a bit cooler and clearer because it's a Sunday morning and the smoke from cooking and clearing scrabble grass haven't really got going yet - but I'll need Sudafed ASAP. We walked around the area looking for Tony's notorious breakfast spot... only to discover that it changed ownership from the Canadian originals to a Mexican. The food was good, the coffee (can you believe?) sub-standard. We called Axuan on Debbie's cell to coordinate plans, then we'll go for the kayaks we negotiated yesterday.

Every time I went outside I had that uncomfortable feeling things were getting out of whack - skywards mostly. Then branches began falling off and intense cracking without visible signs of from where...
...visions of myself pinned under a ton of Central American Yucca and not happy.
This plant was originally a potted version on the 7th floor of my Embarcadero office. It grew up in the last 30 years and now its day has come. ¡Adios yucca querido viejo!Islandbuoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12468544419708965621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7931568969850348198.post-78657329394662918062016-06-06T11:22:00.003-07:002016-06-06T11:22:34.879-07:00Louis Glanzman - fascination with the Maya

Remembering these impressive murals that used to be a backdrop to our taco lunch when my son and stepson were young and we all chowed down at our local Mexican restaurant once a week in the Mission. finally after 20 years i stumble on the painter Louis Glanzman who has an incredible portfolio of work on his site and unfortunately died recently, 2013.
I doubt the murals were originals because I've seen framed prints of ball players.
So if that's true who did the excellent murals in Maya on16th which were probably ruinously eradicated over 20 years ago when the place changed hands?
I'd eat my burro to know!
So I have a garden which has seen very little water in months. No matter, the plant that thrives on parched soils to the rescue. The Yucca. Once it was a little sprout oddity potted in the corner of my San Francisco office on the 7th floor of Embarcadero 4. But they're prolific just about everywhere in California and down south to who knows where. Fast forward some 30 years and the towering beast in my small garden, with a trunk 10 feet in circumference now overwhelms everything in it's shadow. How was I to know it actually presents a drought year bonanza. What drew my attention to the culinary potential of these impressive-looking flowers was a very ethnic indian lady selling various wares on the street corner near my house.
Beside her, piles of these seasonal beauties. A quick search online and I find all sorts of recipe ideas from just about everywhere. Just the kind of challenge I like and What the Hell, I have a skyline full of em. Getting up the wonky ladder and then dangling precariously with a pole saw is one of the ridiculous Cavalier stunts I pull off regularly, sometimes catching the projectile in mid air. Today was another successful catch, but don't do this at home. Now to the kitchen. Recommended approach for Newbies is an omelette, chefs say it's like artichoke. Texturally it's true, although mine was softer and no surprise stringy bits. The flavor was less pronounced however. By dinner time I was feeling adventurous and went for the pasta concept, so I prepped the yucca by sautéing in butter and and onions and bounced in two cups of prepared Putanesca sauce from Trader Joes. Result? Really pleased.Islandbuoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12468544419708965621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7931568969850348198.post-28069614173535544382015-08-26T19:57:00.001-07:002015-09-09T10:48:29.363-07:00Venice beach CA. buzzing through the Walk Streets.

Who wouldn't be teased into casting your luck to the waves with treasures like this to be hauled up. This photo from Ryde Pier head was taken decades after the glory days: 1950, my closest venue for boyhood fun and adventure, with miles of beach combing options running East and West as far as the eye could see, and in those days we had good eyes.Islandbuoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12468544419708965621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7931568969850348198.post-73811516754603406952015-05-14T13:39:00.001-07:002015-05-27T10:25:28.880-07:00Matson Lines Aloha Hawaii menu 1948

Door handle > Hand towel > Sturdy twine > Carpet.
Set up:
Neatly roll towel into tube and firmly tie the twine around the 2 ends forming a noose.
Here's the fussy bit : the bottom loop of the folded towel should just clear the floor by a couple of inches when it dangles freely from the door handle.
So, having done a quick test, you're ready to securely attach the end of the twine to the door knob.
If it's not secure you could thump your head on the floor.
Now all you need to do is cradle your head in the noose and slide your body away from the door to create a comfortable tension. Try about 20 minutes and then slowly raise up and resume your day.

Anton Refregier (1905-1979) born in Moscow. His most famous mural is the 27-panel work. Refregier won this commission from the Section of Fine Arts in 1940 and completed the work in 1948. This mural was the costliest ($26,000) and most controversial of the Public Works, sparking national debate over the inclusion of controversial events from California’s history. Shortly after the murals’ completion a conservative Republican Congressman (the now forgotten Herbert Scudder- erroneously referred to as a senator or a state Representative) demanded the work be covered, insisting the work defamed the pioneers and reflected negatively on California’s past.

The street is changing so dramatically and at warp speed, I thought even this little undramatic moment was worth a note.
Tartine - the chic restaurant and bakery business is trying to be unassuming but with the way things are going that's hard to do.Islandbuoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12468544419708965621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7931568969850348198.post-77611925620992373092014-02-24T09:36:00.002-08:002014-02-24T09:41:51.922-08:00No, we're not in Rio

How long before this place can't afford the neighborhood. I'm not trudging all over to Oakland for a manual egg beater.Islandbuoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12468544419708965621noreply@blogger.com0
